Thanks to its vertically integrated plantation and wet mill (processing facility), Marvin Barrantes can invest more time and care in its coffees and deliver time-intensive coffees, such as this Milenio Black Honey.

Marvin named his 8-acre farm after his mother. He divided his land into segments to grow separate varieties. In addition to the Milenio variety, Marvin also grows Caturra, Sarchimor, Geisha and Villalobos.

The in-house wet mill was started in 2012 with only a small depulper and a few raised beds. Although processing through the 'honey' method is expensive, Marvin can produce these coffees because he has his own wet mill: the short distance from his fields to his mill helps him in terms of time investment, and he can appreciate the value of the processing phase itself.

The coffee berry is selectively picked by Marvin and his family and processed via Marvin's eco-pulpers. They then spread coffee cherries on drying beds. These are stirred regularly to ensure even drying. This takes about 20 days.

Once dried, Marvin takes them to 'Hacienda Sonora' where coffee is stored, dry milled and prepared for export.

Milenio is a high-yielding F1 variety descended from Sudan Rume, and T5296 and was developed by the 'Centre de coopération international en recherche' (CIRAD), a network of national coffee institutes in Central America, and by the 'Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza' (CATIE). Milenio does particularly well in agroforestry and when planted at altitudes above 1,300 meters above sea level. The variety is resistant to Coffee Leaf Rust.

Costa Rica has become a world leader in traceability and sustainability in coffee production. Ninety percent of the country's 50,000 coffee farmers are smallholders.
